“Here is a piece that we did for a class a few years ago. It was a great piece, you could customize it with any initial you like and they could paint it on any size piece they wanted.  It really was a fun class and it looks complicated, but it was really simple.” –Katie

Paint Your Own Pottery Jacksonville: Arts Ignited

“Every few months or so the UF Proton Therapy Institute asks us to come to their monthly Family Night.  The UFPTI is a place that cancer patients come from all over the world to be treated with Proton Therapy, and many are young children.  We bring plates for the children and their families to paint, take them back to the shop, fire them and deliver them back to the UFPTI.  We always have a wonderful time and the families really seem to enjoy it as well.  During a recent Family Night there was a young boy with cancer who, with his family, painted several plates.  His father painted the plate pictured in the photo attached.  When he brought it up to us as finished, I asked him if he might want to decorate it up a little more with some of the other colors we had brought or use some of the design tools we had on hand.  He said no, that he just wanted it simple because his plan was to take it home and when his son beat the cancer, he was going to hand him a hammer so his son could smash the plate into bits.  Then he was going to take those pieces and display them in a shadow box in a trophy case in their home.  My daughter (who was helping me out that evening) and I were both tearing up a bit and I said “that’s the only time I’ve liked the idea of someone breaking one of my plates.” I sure hope he sends us a picture of that plate broken into a million pieces!” -Diane

“Grandma and granddaughter really wanted to make this Christmas special. Daddy’s been out of town for awhile and he loves Christmas trees, so she painted him a tree with a blue star. Since Mommy loves angels, she painted her an angel ornament. And the tree candle holder? That’s just for her!” -Andrea
