All over the Puget Sound there are birthday boys and girls who won’t have a party, presents, or even a cake. Their birthday will be just another day without any fanfare because they’re living in a system that, quite simply, can’t afford to throw a celebration for every birthday. These are homeless kids living in shelters with their families.

A few days ago, I was having a conversation with my six-year old son – he’s the youngest of my three children and definitely the most outspoken. He asked me if I loved him. My answer was an emphatic “yes!” He then asked if I loved his siblings, naming each of them. Once again, my answer was “yes.” That sounds like a sweet little conversation most moms have with their kids occasionally, right? It didn’t end there. He then said, “But you love me the most, right?” How does one even answer that? I told him that I love all of them equally. He didn’t want to hear that.
